What is a Box Print or Depthprint
A Depthprint or "Box Print" is a three dimentional way to hang or display a high resolution digital photograph using a very rigid box construction that is both strong yet lightweight. |

Our solution is brand new and superior to traditional methods. So what have we replaced? The traditional method is (or was) to first to produce a flat 2D print or photograph and then to mount it behind glass on a seperate (and heavy) frame. There are a few disadvantages of doing it the old way 1) The frame and glass add weight to the construction 2) A frame and glass adds cost both in materials and shipping weight 3) Frames can look dated and jar against the demand for modern contemporary minimal looks 4) Frames can distract your focus from the important part of the object - the image 5) Glass is dangerous especially near children and can actually obscure the vibrancy of your print colour. 6) Glass can break both during transit and of course later if your work of art is dropped or disturbed. 7) Glass can limit the areas and places that images can be displayed in. Below is how we get from a flat piece of card to a 3-Dimensional stunning work of art. |
| First
we select a single sheet of reinforced card impregnated with a special "print
sensitive" coating. We check it for dirt and fingerprints. If its even slightly
dusty or imperfect we discard it. Next we use a computer to control our huge laser
guided flatbed cutter to score millimeter perfect complex patterns into the card.
The guidance is so accurate that we can stop it from cutting right through the
card.. It then goes on to create indents allowing the material to be manipulated at a later stage . This is now your base. |
This is a look at the back of the base.
Next we use more state of the art commercial printing machinery to overlay your images.
The folding technique is so complex that our staff prefer to manipulate your print into its super strong box shape.
Its better you let us do it because not only are we used to doing it but if we make a mistake the burden is on us to fix it
Plus the artwork will actually travel better to you in its final rigid format than if we sent it out flat.
The seams and creases are being bent and soon the operator will interlock all the parts to form the rigid structure.
Once
folded the operator will reinforce the corners with a mesh tape. This frame is
not only very strong and rigid but it is also lightweight |
To complete the work a backing panel is applied which is pre-fitted with a hanging eyelet. It takes a skilled operator about an hour to hand produce each work of art from a digital print that you supply to the final box Canvas. |
